I am gay and I am a PhD student in the field of biochemistry and microbiology.//

Hi I am Joy. I am a PhD student in the field of biochemistry and microbiology. I love microorganisms, honestly, they are the coolest bugs and most interestingly the ones who have lived for millions and even billions of years, adapted to the most extreme corners of our planet and they are called extremophilic microorganisms. My current research focuses on studying photosynthetic proteins involved in electron transfer in the photosynthetic extremophilic cyanobacteria (blue green algae) and use them for building our model ‘bio-hybrid’ solar cells. We are trying to understand how we can engineer these proteins to make these photovoltaic cells more efficient. I have always been fascinated about science since I was in middle school back in India. Growing up in a country, where I had to hide my identity in a closet for a long time, was definitely tough but as we progressed, so did my country. I am a proud human being and want to be even prouder my committing to science and contributing to the community in every possible way irrespective of my sexuality!
