I am queer and I am a clinician – scientist.//

I got my medical qualification in 1982 and chose to start post grad training in Clinical Immunology. AIDS came along in the mid-eighties, and I spent the next ten years doing HIV research and looking after people with HIV. During this time, I did a PhD at University College in London and the Bundesgesundheitsamt in Berlin. It is fantastic that we can now both prevent HIV infection and expect that those already living with infection can have healthy, happy lives.

What I loved about Immunology was the rapid scientific development which soon translated into better lives for people with infections, cancer and autoimmunity. I hope I managed to share some of that enthusiasm in the 3 textbooks I have written.

I met some brilliant people along the way. A few were medics, many were scientists, but most were patients.
