He/Him

I am gay and I am a professor of chemistry. //

I’m Professor of Chemistry at University of York, and passionate about both education and our research into smart nanomaterials and medicines. Much of our research was inspired by the health problems faced by my husband Sam (https://rsc.li/2HI9mul), making me a highly visible gay scientist. I am very engaged in diversity work, having written and lectured widely on the representation of LGBT+ scientists, and was shortlisted for the Gay Times Honours Barbara Burford Award for activist work representing LGBT+ individuals in STEM. I received the Royal Society of Chemistry Corday Morgan Award, a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship, and am one of the RSC’s 175 diverse “Faces of Chemistry.” In 2010, I entered into a civil partnership with my husband Sam. We live in central York, with our adopted son. We enjoy the vibrant and historic city, and like cooking and travelling.
