Daniel Carvalho

He/Him

I am bi and I am a PhD student in agronomy and horticulture. //

I’ve been studying the evolution of C4 photosynthesis in grasses (such as corn and sorghum) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The main focus of my research is using comparative genomics to shed some light on the genes involved in the C4 pathway and learn ways to improve it. I noticed my passion for evolution and bioinformatics when I was an undergrad back in Brazil, where I never met any openly LGBTQ+ faculty/advisor. I hope the 500 Queer Scientists initiative helps other LGBTQ+ people in Brazil (and elsewhere) see that we’re represented in STEM and any other fields.
