She/Her

I am gay and I am a science teacher.//

I graduated from the Royal Veterinary College with a degree in Veterinary Nursing and worked for 10 years as a Veterinary Nurse before I decided to re-train as a secondary school science teacher. I thought that becoming a teacher was going to mean going back in the closet and I was in two minds about making the move into education for this reason. I was lucky enough to secure a job in a wonderfully progressive school that make it easy for me to be my authentic self at work both with my colleagues and the students I teach. I belong to a network of other LGBT+ teachers called LGBTed who support and empower teachers to be open in their work place. This group encourages LGBT+ teachers to become the role models that they needed when they were at school and I very much feel that with support from this group and my school that I am able to achieve this now. There is nothing greater in the world than the feeling you get when a young person tells you that you helped them feel more accepted and happy with who they are.
