I am queer and I am a microbial ecologist.//
I am a researcher, science communicator, and professor at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station. I became interested in science through a natural curiosity, love of wilderness, and concern about diminishing natural resources. My research projects in the last decade investigate how microbes respond to global changes (like agriculture and drought). I also lead the KBS Long Term Ecological Research project, focused on agroecosystems. My non-research projects focus on broadening participation in science, and creative communication. I love finding humans and stories in science, and gravitate toward art-science ventures. My personal life is filled with sports, travel, and family (my wife and two children b. 2023 and 2018). My wife is also an academic, we both work for MSU. I love playing soccer, running, and planning adventures in mountainous regions. I am originally from Alabama and am happy to return to the southeastern US when I can. I am so glad this website exists because representation and visibility matter, and I love how I meet so many interesting and inspirational people through my work. Keep on keepin on!
