I am gay and I am a bacteriologist. //
I am currently a Master of Science candidate at Dalhousie University, my undergraduate alma mater. I’m from a pretty conservative Canadian province, so even though I knew I was gay at a young age, I struggled to express it. When I moved for university to pursue a science undergraduate, I had the opportunity to not only express myself, but be open and out with my friends and family. Since finding my feet in science, as well as a group of supportive mentors and colleagues, I have managed to flourish both personally and professionally. Now I spend much of my time in the lab, and also mentoring undergraduates through teaching. I hope to show the younger generation of scientists that you can find community and support in science, even though it sometimes doesn’t feel like it.
