I am gay and I am a structural biologist. //

I’m a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, in the lab of Bill DeGrado. I’m generally interested in how protein structure results in biological function and I primarily use crystallography and computational techniques to understand these relationships. As a postdoc, I’m studying how antimicrobial peptides recognize phospholipids in cellular membranes to result in membrane permeabilization and inflammation. Outside of the lab, I have been an organizer for graduate student/postdoc unionization because I believe that unions have the ability to represent and support marginalized and minority workers and help address lack of diversity throughout academia.
