I am a lesbian and I am a biological oceanographer.//
Hi! I am an oceanography PhD student studying ecosystem services and aquaculture. My research is attempting to gain a greater understanding of the interactions that aquaculture farms are having with coastal environments. Although I grew up in the Midwest I have always been infatuated with the ocean and sea life. I completed my BS in Marine Sciences from Savannah State University in 2019 and soon after went to work as a lab assistant at a shellfish research field station where I gained an interest in aquaculture. I was fortunate enough to be able to pursue this new interest in my PhD research.
Growing up in a Baptist and socially conservative household led me to accept my sexual orientation a bit later in life. Sometimes working in remote non-queer friendly communities can be difficult, but I want to be the representation that I lacked growing up. I am passionate about STEM education and outreach as they helped me find my love of science. Through my research I have been able to build educational tools to help encourage young students to consider STEM careers. As a black lesbian scientist I hope to contribute to the growing visibility and diversity in STEM.
