He/Him

I am gay and I am an evolutionary biologist.//

I am a postdoc in evolutionary biology. Originally from Germany, I grew up in a small, rural town and never really had any connections to the LGBTQ community. I went to the Technical University of Darmstadt for my PhD, when I came to terms with myself and who I am as a person and a scientist. When I moved to the US and started a postdoc at the Caltech in Southern California, I finally found my community and could not be happier. I believe that uniqueness is powerful and all scientists – no matter where they come from, who they are, or whom they love – have something to build a healthy society. Science should be the place where we can be our most authentic selves and not be anxious to fit in. Since I joined Caltech, I have become an active member of the Caltech Postdoctoral Association executive board and served as one of two chairs for Diversity and Inclusion.
