I am gay and I am a microbiologist. //
I’m Víctor Flores, I’m a gay microbiologist doing a PhD in CINVESTAV Mexico, working on the functional ecology of plant-associated microbial communities. I’m sharing my @500QueerSci story because I want to show that the LGBTQ+ community can fight the norm in science and accomplish everything we want by being truthful to our identities. As a Mexican I have faced homophobia in almost every aspect of my life. Even in research institutes, LGBTQ+ colleagues are continuously criticized and mocked because of the way we talk, walk, and dress. I believe we must fight bigotry by embracing and being unapologetic about our gender and sexual identities. I want people to know that our contribution to science and society is and has always been valid and important.
