He/They
I am gay and I am a materials scientist.//
I am both gay and gender non-conforming/non-binary. I am a materials science PhD student at the University of California, San Diego, developing electrode materials for next-generation energy storage devices. I leverage both solid-state chemistry and crystallography to uncover and solve complex heteroanionic crystal structures, which are later intercalated with Li-ions in batteries. The core of my research involves discerning structure-property relationships to realize material functionalities using synchrotron diffraction and neutron scattering techniques. Probing reaction heterogeneities during battery degradation and mapping lattice evolution during battery cycling are also aspects of my work I find intriguing. I care deeply about empowering others to embrace authenticity, critical thinking, outreach, sustainability, and empathy. By being open about my sexuality and gender identity, my hope is that others are uplifted and more comfortable with welcoming all facets of themselves.
