Peyton Thomas

She/Her

I am queer and polyamorous and I am a fish physiologist.//

I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Colorado-Boulder and Université du Québec a Rimouski. Most of my work focuses on understanding how fish respond to environmental stressors such as temperature and low oxygen stress and better understanding the interconnectivity of ecosystems through the lens of fish habitat suitability. I have experience working in freshwater, estuarine, and marine systems, primarily with fishes but am also open and interested in exploring the physiology and conservation of many other organisms. I am interested in conducting relational work, uplifting local and Indigenous communities, and facilitating environmental protection for all. I also fully believe in deconstructing colonialism, capitalism, and singular superiority in all areas of life, especially STEM. As a queer non-monogamous Black woman, I challenge current systems and want to continue to do so and provide space for others who have been minoritized. I want to continuously challenge my own and others’ biases, listen, and reframe how I show up for myself, others, and the planet.
