I am bi and I am a movement ecologist.//
My name is Nicki and I am a 4th year Ph.D. student that specializes in spatial/movement ecology and marine systems. For my dissertation, I am studying the migration of sea turtles through different life stages using a combination of quantitative methods and tagging fieldwork. Being queer and identifying as bi has been a relatively recent discovery in graduate school and one that I attribute to my integration into a wonderfully supportive queer graduate student community. I have learned that I can be a scientist and a “professional” without feeling that I have to suppress or hide who I am. I have also learned the importance of community (we are not and do not have to be alone) and that my value as a person is not defined solely by my work as a scientist. Cheers and virtual hugs to my queer colleagues!
