Mira Kelly-Fair

She/Her

I am a lesbian and I am a coastal and marine geographer and remote senser.//

I am a PhD student in Boston University’s department of Earth and Environment. I develop maps and models of nearshore and coastal environments to examine the relationship of Coupled and Human Natural Systems (CHANS). Recently I have been involved in writing a textbook chapter, modeling potential locations for offshore wind energy, and examining the sustainability of palm oil in Indonesia. My current project focuses on the distribution of mangroves species in Belize using remote sensing, spectroscopy, and expert knowledge.

I have worked in science and science outreach my entire career. After finishing my undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke College, I worked as a naturalist and marine scientist in Maui, Maine, Stellwagen Bank, and San Francisco—my hometown. These experiences have led me to have a deep understanding of how individuals connect to and affect the natural world. This desire to educate and learn from the communities around us is something I endeavor to continue for the duration of my career.
