Marilù Casini
They/Them
I am non-binary and I am a biomedical scientist.//
I am PhD-level researcher at the Polytechnic University of Valencia where I work with stem cells to better understand cardiac diseases. Thanks to this collaborative project, I had the opportunity to work in some of the most expert cardio labs around Europe, moving from Florence (Italy), to Leiden (Netherlands), Oxford (UK), Göttingen and finally Freiburg (Germany). My project is focused on differentiating heart cells from stem cells and creating in-vitro models of cardiac diseases for future drug testing. This is a small part of what we call “personalized medicine”!
During these years of research I got involved in science communication and opened my own channels on social media. After 3 years online, my community reached 80k people and I created a support group for Italian PhDs called “PhDISAGIO”. With my community on TikTok and Instagram, I share the message that science is for everyone, LGBT+ people included! As a queer scientist, I often felt lonely within academia and wanted to contribute to a more inclusive science.
I am currently working on a new SciComm project, if you are interested in knowing more about it, follow and text me 🙂
