I am a non-binary lesbian, and I am a structural biologist.//
I’m a PhD candidate in Biology at McGill University where I study the microtubule cytoskeleton. I’m using a combination of cryo-electron microscopy and dynamics assays by fluorescence and light microscopy to characterize these unique protein polymers in-vitro. I knew I was a lesbian in undergrad but had to navigate discovering my gender identity and coming out as non-binary in graduate school. I was lucky to join a supportive lab and meet other trans and non-binary scientists at my institution and beyond.
At McGill, I organize the Queer Grad Club and Tea4T, a group for trans staff, faculty, and students. I’ve found a lot of joy in connecting with other queer scientists through this work. I’ve hosted “Trans and Non-binary in Academia” panel workshops with Tea4T and a symposium for queer researchers called “Out Loud” with multiple student groups at McGill. Recently, I wrote an article for the ASCB about navigating STEM as a non-binary grad student after a member of their communications subcommittee found my profile here on 500 Queer Scientists! Through 500QS, I would love to continue connecting with other 2SLGBTQ+ scientists and increase the visibility of scientists living outside the gender binary.
