I am gay and I am a first generation graduate student.//
As a queer, first-generation college student, pursuing a graduate education was not always a clear path for me. However, after earning my Associate’s degree in biology at Salt Lake Community College, I transferred to the University of Utah, where I joined a joint Bachelor’s/Master’s program to pursue my passion for translational research.
Since starting at the University of Utah, I’ve conducted research in the lab of Dr. Erik Jorgensen, whose work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic vesicle fusion and regeneration. In addition, the Jorgensen lab works on developing innovative genetic and microscopy technologies for broader use in the scientific community. During my time in the Jorgensen lab, I have contributed to both of these areas of research, which has shaped my technical expertise and fueled my passion for advancing scientific knowledge.
This fall (August 2025), I’ll begin my PhD under Dr. Jorgensen’s continued mentorship, where I hope to continue to build a career at the intersection of discovery and equity in STEM.
When I’m not in the lab, I recharge by reading, watching Netflix, spending time with loved ones (including my Labrador retriever, Louis), and taking well-deserved naps.
