Joshua Russell

He/Him

I am queer and I am a social scientist in a STEM department.//

I am a social science researcher, associate professor, and writer in the Department of Animal Behavior, Ecology, & Conservation at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. I also direct our graduate program in Anthrozoology. I completed a PhD in Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada in 2013. Prior to my PhD I did a MA in Environmental Conservation Education at NYU and a BA in Psychology at Canisius.

My research, teaching, and writing are very interdisciplinary, drawing from animal behaviour, posthumanism, phenomenology, environmental education, human-animal studies, queer theory, and more. I’m interested in questions about children’s relationships with other animal species, environments, and ideas about the future. I also write about how queer theory can be applied to our thinking about other animals as well as the goals of environmental education and conservation. My recently published book is Queer Ecopedagogies, and features the work of a lot of amazing scholars around the globe.

Though I work in the US, I live in Canada with my partner Sean and our dog, Penny.
