He/Him
I am gay and I am an evolutionary developmental biologist.//
I am from the UK but moved to the US for graduate school. I came out at the start of graduate school in the early 90s when it was still a risky proposition for an academic career, and there were very few gay men out in my field. I have been lucky and had a very supportive environment in all the institutions I have worked at. I am now a professor at Stanford University in Biology, with my lab based at the Marine Station in Monterey. I met my husband as a starting postdoc and we married in 2013 as soon as we were able and adopted our daughter 5 years ago. Since I came out, things have changed substantially and are moving in the right direction for LGBTQ scientists, but we have a long way to go. Being visible is important, both on a national and local level.
