Albert Basson

He/Him

I am gay and I am a neuroscientist.//

I grew up in South Africa in the 70’s and 80’s. It was the time of apartheid, right-wing ideologies and religion – being gay was not accepted and could get you into jail, beaten up or, in the very least, discriminated against. I was therefore closeted, with the exception of close friends. I moved to the UK in 1992 to start my PhD at the University of Cambridge. Being in an environment where I was able to be myself and accepted for who I am was incredible, and I settled in the UK. Upon completion of my PhD, I moved to London where I have spent most of my life, with the exception of a couple of post-doctoral stints in New York City and San Francisco. I recently relocated to Exeter where I am Professor of Neuroscience and Epigenetics at the University of Exeter. I am excited about building a new life in such a beautiful part of the world.
