She/They
I am trans, non-binary, lesbian and I am a neurophysiologist.//
Over thirty-plus years as a scientist, I’ve evolved as a researcher, an educator, and as a queer person. Research included developmental neurobiology, cellular electrophysiology, and ion channel molecular biology and pharmacology. I did undergraduate research at Carleton College (BA Biology), graduate work at USC (PhD Neurobiology), postdoctoral work at the University of Washington (Senior Fellow), ran a lab and taught at the University of Connecticut (Assistant Professor) and University of British Columbia (Adjunct Professor), and then moved to industry to run labs and do clinical development on antiarrhythmics, congestive heart failure, hyperuricemia, and neuropathic pain. Since 2007, I’ve taught courses in neurology, anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology for students in Biomedical Engineering, Electroneurophysiology, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Medical Laboratory Sciences. I’ve been a member of the Research Ethics Board since 2012 and served as chair between 2015 and 2022.
Outside of science and education, I discovered a love of reading, writing, kayaking, snorkeling, and long walks. Technical hobbies include electronics and genetic genealogy. My partner has been with me through it all and I’ve drawn strength from her wit and positive attitude.
