I’m gay and I’m a neuroscientist and professor. //

I was born in India, came to Chicago to study artificial intelligence, wandered into a behavioral ethology class, and fell in love with snails. I started a PhD in neuroscience, fell in love with a man, came out. Got a PhD, got heartbroken, moved to UCLA, and worked on the development of zebrafish. Gained some pride, came out to family, and moved to NYC amidst the drama. Worked at Columbia on neural-computer interfaces, went on a speed date and met my partner. Moved across the country for a faculty job, my partner became my husband. I now teach neuroscience and am super-proud to be a queer scientist, sometimes burlesque performer.
