I’m gay and I’m a neuroscientist turned discipline-based education researcher. //
I’m an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. My research focuses on how we can improve the way we teach undergraduate biology. I’m particularly interested in issues related to diversity and equity; my research has explored the experiences of LGBTQIA students in active learning undergraduate biology classrooms and factors that influence whether biology faculty come out to their students. Because LGBTQIA identity is a hidden identity, I make a point to come out to my 300+ person classroom on the very first day of class so that I can serve as a role model and mentor for students.
