I am gay and I am a researcher in materials science and engineering, and engineering education. //
I’m a researcher and educator in materials engineering, Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology, and Constellation Professor at UMBC, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I served as a visiting professor for research at the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1996 and 2002 and as a visiting professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, in 2003. I’m also a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society. Awards at Purdue University include receiving Purdue’s highest teaching award, the Charles Murphy Undergraduate Teaching Award, and the Purdue College of Engineering Mentoring Award. I’ve also held leadership roles at the Illinois Institute of Technology and San Francisco State University.
