Emily A Carlson

She/Her

I am bi/queer and I am an entomologist.//

I am a PhD candidate at Oregon State University, studying pesticide exposure in honey bees and native bees. I got my undergraduate Bachelors of Science in Biology from Gonzaga and spent two years in AmeriCorps doing riparian restoration. I have always found creepy-crawlies of all sorts cute and intriguing. I first got into entomology working with landowners to improve pollinator habitat on livestock farms. Now, I am thrilled to spend my time in the lab and the field, uniting diverse stakeholders under the banner of pollinator conservation!

I can be a pretty private person when it comes to sharing personal details. For the most part, I am comfortable with this balance, but it does lead to uncomfortable assumptions that I’m never sure if I should contradict. I have a non-traditional family structure and it can be scary to share who the people in my desk photo are and why they are important to me. I am inspired by other queer STEM scientists to be myself bravely; and I hope to support others in feeling the same.

When taking a break from my studies, I love kickboxing, playing card games, and curating absurd playlists for every occasion.
