I am gay and I am an environmental planner and hydrogeologist.//
I worked as a hybrid geologist, hydrologist, and environmental planner/scientist my entire career. It’s been extremely fulfilling, but definitely has had its challenges being queer in this space. Drill rigs, heavy equipment, and construction sites are reserved spaces for macho men, so I’ve missed out on or avoided formative experience and fun field work due to my aversion to homophobia. Even so, this field is very challenging and rewarding, and I’d be happy to connect with anyone interested the earth sciences aspects of STEM. Queer geologists/hydrologists exist but we are a rare breed!
