He/They
I am queer and I am an urban ecologist.//
I am ecologist interested in all things urban ecology, environmental justice, planning, and management. I completed my PhD at the University of California, Berkeley where I researched how societal inequity influenced the ecology of cities. My research spanned across ecological scales, from what shapes an animal behavior to investigating the drivers of biodiversity.
I use many facets of my identity, including being Afro-Latino and Queer, to inform the research questions I ask and how I engage with the field of ecology. I see many parts of myself reflected in the urban wildlife I’ve studied, primarily coyotes and raccoons that are misunderstood and often mischaracterized by the general public – similar to how my otherness (e.g., Queerness) may be (or is) misunderstood.
