I am gay and I am a Senior Lecturer (UK ~Associate Professor). //
I am a materials scientist and engineer (aka an Atomic Wizard). I try to understand how metals break and to make them break less often, throwing in some mechanistic understanding and awesome microacopm to help. Day-to-day life has been influenced by my sexuality—as I have become more secure in my professional life, I have forced myself to become more secure in my personal life. Looking back, being gay hasn’t hurt my choices or opportunities (directly), but it can be exhausting to repeatedly come out to colleagues or to lie by omission/exhaustion when the gender of a partner or date appears in the discussion. There’s still a fair bit to sort in my life, but everyday it feels like these things are getting easier. I am also a trustee of @PrideinSTEM.
